The 10th academic year begins at Üleilmakool for children from abroad

September 15, the Üleilmakool for Estonian-speaking children living outside Estonia will start its tenth academic year, where 300 students from 33 countries already study.

Andero Adamson , head of the language policy department of the Ministry of Education and Research , noted that the Üleilmakool offers an excellent opportunity to learn the Estonian language, literature and other subjects in Estonian in order to maintain and improve children's Estonian language skills while living abroad and encourage their return to Estonia in the future. "The work done by the teachers of Uleilmakooli ensures that the children have good mother tongue skills, which is very important in the development of the child's Estonian identity. At the end of the last academic year, 25 children who studied at least one academic year at Üleilmakool have returned to Estonia. The Estonian language skills and knowledge acquired there will be a great support for continuing studies in Estonia," said Adamson.

Helja Kirber , head of Üleilmakool, added that parents have given feedback that learning the Estonian language and in Estonian at Üleilmakool helps to expand vocabulary and highlights topics that are not present in everyday communication. Individual and small group online lessons are considered useful and necessary because the language learner can speak for himself and there is a lively interaction that is part of language learning.

Elementary school-age students can learn Estonian language and literature, Estonian history, social studies, Estonian geography and mathematics in a total of 29 different courses on e-courses. The Estonian language is studied the most, many students take several courses. The Estonian language course as a foreign language and the Estonian language course for young people aged 16-26 are popular. In addition to the written course, many families also want individual online lessons, and video meetings are organized for different groups during the school year.

Üelmakool cooperates with the Estonian School of New York, whose head Merike Barborak teaches children living in the United States. Krista Arro, Tjorven Siiboja, Lee Laurimäe, Tiina Maripuu, Kerttu Maripuu, Helja Kirber, Piret Rannast, Sirje Sild, Karolina Antons, Kaari Rodima, Maibritt Kuuskmäe, Kerli Liksor, Kristi Oolo, Kristiina Rattasepp, Liivi Heinla, Liina Särkinen and Leelo Kivirand.
