Here are a few grants for the publication of a monograph:

1. DARIAH offers an annual Open Access Monograph Bursary for Early Career Researchers in Digital Humanities

From 2021, DARIAH-EU launched an annual Open Access Book Bursary for the publication of one’s first monograph within the domain of Digital Humanities. The bursary will fund the Open Access publication of one monograph (or other long form of scholarship) per year.

By doing so, DARIAH-EU aims to further strengthen its long-standing commitment to pave pathways to the open research culture as it specifically pertains to arts and humanities disciplines and  to enable early career researchers, who are usually less privileged in institutional Open Access grants, to openly disseminate their first monographs in book series that are topically most relevant for their field of interest. In terms of publishing venues, the bursary aims to support community-driven, fair players and therefore publication in a DOAB certified, fair Open Access publication venue with transparent pricing and in alignment with the SPARC Good Practice Principles with Scholarly Communication Services is set as an absolute eligibility criterion

Criteria regarding the APPLICANTS:

  • The call is open for Early Career Researchers who wish to publish their first monograph Open Access.
  • The call is exclusive for Early Career Researchers whose PhDs are awarded (or to be awarded) in DARIAH member countries or are having professional affiliation (academic or alt-ac)  in a DARIAH member country.
  • The DARIAH affiliation of the author or a funding statement must be clearly identifiable in the publication, preferably even as part of the metadata.

Publication costs will be covered up to the maximum of 7,000 EUR (incl. VAT). In exceptional cases and with sufficient justification, a maximum of 500 EUR extension is possible (for instance, extra charges for a CC-BY license).

2. Open access book fund for UG and UMCG authors

The University of Groningen has introduced an open access book fund. UG- and UMCG-affiliated authors can apply for funding the publication of their monograph or edited volume.

The fund will run until August 2023. The continuation of the fund beyond August 2023 is conditional on funding renewal by the UG/UMCG.

The maximum reimbursement is €8,000 (incl. VAT) per book.

Author(s) and/or editor(s) have to be affiliated with the UG or the UMCG.

Publishers should ideally meet the basic requirements set by the Directory of Open Access Books (DOAB). In addition to meeting the DOAB criteria, publishers are (strongly) encouraged to assign a DOI to the publication and deposit it in the OAPEN-Library to enhance its discoverability. The University Library will check whether these criteria are met. If the requirements cannot be fully met, authors are invited to still contact the University Library to discuss the publisher's eligibility.

3. Grants from the University of Manchester Library

Unfunded monograph authors from any University Faculty can enter the Library’s Open Access (OA) monograph competition, as long as they will soon be publishing a monograph or published one on or after 1 October 2021 – this includes eligible entries from last year’s competition.

Winners will receive funding from the Library to make their monographs OA. The Library will arrange this directly with the winners’ publishers.

Submit a paragraph of no more than 300 words explaining why your research will benefit from OA publication to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. by 24 February 2023. Please include your publisher and your proposed or actual date of publication.

We would particularly welcome entries from authors publishing with fully open access book publishers.
