A prominent TikTok influencer and former lab technician at Baylor College of Medicine, Texas, has confessed to taking "several shortcuts" resulting in falsified data in work funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), according to a U.S. government watchdog.

Darrion Nguyen, known to his over half a million TikTok followers as "lab_shenanigans," was found guilty of research misconduct by the Office of Research Integrity (ORI). The misconduct involved intentionally falsifying and fabricating experimental data and results across multiple research records, including two manuscript figures, a research progress report, a poster, and a presentation.

The ORI's investigation focused on the research report titled "Illuminating GABAergic Signaling in Neurodevelopmental Disorders," submitted to the NIH in July 2021. The report included fabricated data on the number of mice used, their interactions, as well as exaggerated brain measurements and symptom severity in mice.

Nguyen explained to Retraction Watch, “I was in a lab environment where I was mentally struggling, and I took several shortcuts to produce more data. This stemmed from the fear of my [principal investigator], the pressure to meet expectations to keep my job as a technician, and my personal struggles to keep up with the demands of that lab.” He highlighted the harmful impact of the "publish or perish" culture prevalent in academia.

Nguyen began posting online videos and TikToks in 2019, often combining his late-night lab work with creative sessions. He left Baylor in September 2020 and now works as a science communicator, producing engaging and easily digestible science content.

The ORI’s findings concern grants exceeding $1 million. Hsiao-Tuan Chao, the principal investigator on the grants to Baylor, did not respond to requests for comment.

Nguyen has agreed to a three-year supervision of his research activities, which includes submitting supervision plans and certification of evidence if involved in any U.S. Public Health Service-funded research.

“Upon the launch of this investigation, I immediately stepped forward and maintained complete transparency throughout the process. I take full accountability for my mistakes and recognize the importance of owning up to them,” Nguyen stated.
