As Ukraine commemorates the second anniversary of the war with Russia, its scientific community mourns the loss of numerous colleagues who have perished during the conflict. Since the invasion began on February 24, 2022, over 100 Ukrainian scientists, along with many students, have lost their lives, either on the front lines, in attacks on cities, or due to war-related stress and medical challenges.

Among those lost are individuals from diverse fields, each leaving behind a unique legacy. For instance:

  1. Volodymyr Kozlovskyy: A soil chemist renowned for his expertise in heavy metal contamination in ecosystems, Kozlovskyy was admired for his scientific prowess and passion for nature. Despite his contributions to academia, he courageously joined the Territorial Defense brigade and ultimately sacrificed his life in combat in June 2023.

  2. Igor Galkin: A junior scientist specializing in sapphire crystal growth, Galkin volunteered for the Territorial Defense Forces at the onset of the invasion, displaying both scientific acumen and a deep sense of duty. Tragically, he lost his life in May 2023 while on duty, leaving behind a void in both his family and the scientific community.

  3. Lyudmila Shevtsova: An esteemed biologist and expert on river ecosystems, Shevtsova's lifelong dedication to science and teaching impacted generations of students. Even in her later years, she remained intellectually engaged and committed to her academic pursuits. Her untimely death in January 2024 serves as a poignant reminder of the profound loss suffered by Ukraine's scientific community.

These vignettes offer glimpses into the lives of individuals whose contributions enriched Ukrainian science and society. As the nation grapples with the enduring impact of war, it honors the memory of these fallen scientists and reaffirms its commitment to preserving their legacies amidst adversity.
