In a bid to support open access initiatives in the UK, the UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) has introduced a comprehensive two-stage application process for research organizations. The Open Access Foundation for Extended Editions, Phase Two, focuses on funding monographs, book chapters, and edited collections within the framework of UKRI's Open Access (OA) policy.

Stage One: Registration of Outcomes

During the initial stage, research organizations in Great Britain can register outcomes for potential funding via an online form hosted on Citizen Space. It is emphasized that only employees responsible for open access funding in UK research organizations are eligible to submit applications. Notably, researchers, applicants from organizations outside the UK, and publishers are deemed ineligible.

Key Steps in Stage One:

  1. Register outcomes through the online form on Citizen Space.
  2. No need to sign a publishing contract at this stage.
  3. UKRI reviews the application to confirm eligibility for funding.

Stage Two: Application for Funding

Upon successful completion of Stage One, organizations can proceed to Stage Two for the actual application of funding. The second stage involves meeting specific requirements, and applicants must be responsible for open access in their respective organizations.

Key Details for Stage Two:

  1. Applications accepted only from staff responsible for open access funding in UK research organizations.
  2. Authors are not required to fill out the form; the open access funding group at the research organization should handle the registration.
  3. Up to ten publications can be registered in each Stage One submission, with multiple submissions allowed.
  4. Submission confirmation and unique reference number are emailed upon completion.
  5. UKRI considers the application and notifies applicants about funding eligibility.

Open Access Foundation for Extended Editions: Phase Two

Building on the outcomes registered in Phase One, this phase enables research organizations to claim OA costs for approved monographs, book chapters, and edited collections. The applications must adhere to UKRI's OA policy and be immediately available with a Creative Commons license.

Steps for Phase Two Application:

  1. The Project Manager is responsible for the UKRI Funding Service application process.
  2. Complete the application by answering questions directly in the text boxes.
  3. Create or log in to a Funding Service account, selecting the organization and confirming email address.
  4. Submission of the completed application to the academic office for review.
  5. The research office sends the verified application to UKRI for final processing.
