TikTok is taking steps to address concerns related to misinformation by introducing a new tool that allows creators to label content generated by artificial intelligence (AI). The tool aims to facilitate compliance with TikTok's existing AI policy, which mandates the labeling of manipulated content presenting realistic scenes as fake or altered.
The social media platform explicitly prohibits deepfakes, which are digitally manipulated videos or images created using AI, especially those that mislead users about real-world events. While TikTok disallows deepfakes involving private figures and young individuals, it permits altered images of public figures in specific contexts, such as for artistic and educational purposes.
As part of its efforts to enhance transparency, TikTok will test an "AI-generated" label this week, intended for content it identifies as edited or created by AI. Furthermore, effects on the app involving AI will be renamed to explicitly include "AI" in their names and corresponding labels.
This move by TikTok aligns with broader concerns about the impact of the AI arms race on misinformation. In response, regulatory bodies, including the European Union, have been urging online platforms to intensify efforts in combating false information by implementing labels on content—text, photos, and more—generated by artificial intelligence.
