Clarivate Plc has released its Highly Cited Researchers™ list for 2023, recognizing influential researchers worldwide who have made significant and widespread contributions in their respective fields. The list, curated by analysts at the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI)™, acknowledges 6,849 researchers from over 1,300 institutions across 67 nations and regions.

Key Highlights of the 2023 Highly Cited Researchers List:

  1. Global Representation: The list includes researchers from diverse backgrounds, with 83.8% based in the top 10 countries and 72.7% in the top five countries. The concentration of top talent is evident on a global scale.

  2. Multidisciplinary Influence: Exceptional researchers are recognized across multiple Essential Science Indicators™ (ESI) research fields. Among the awardees, 238 are named in two fields, 21 in three fields, four in four fields, and one in five fields, showcasing broad, multidisciplinary influence.

  3. Geographical Trends:

    • The United States maintains a leading position with 37.5% of the Highly Cited Researchers, although this share has slightly decreased from 43.3% in 2018.
    • Mainland China secures the second position with 17.9% of Highly Cited Researchers, demonstrating substantial growth from 7.9% in 2018. This highlights China's significant contributions to global research.
    • The Chinese Academy of Sciences tops the list among institutions, with 270 Highly Cited Researchers, reflecting China's growing influence in scientific and scholarly contributions.
  4. Evolution of the Evaluation Process: In response to threats to research integrity, the evaluation and selection process for Highly Cited Researchers has evolved. Analysts reviewed Highly Cited Papers™ from the past decade, applying enhanced qualitative filters to identify anomalies and ensure the inclusion of trustworthy researchers.
